Song cycle: Some Keep The Sabbath; I Stepped From Plank To Plank; In This Short Life
2010 | soprano/piano

This short cycle, using three poems by Emily Dickinson, commemorates three important events: my mother’s 90th and 92nd birthdays and my father’s 95th birthday.
I created a version for tenor in December of 2020.

IN THE NEWER EDITION FROM MARCH 2019 — please note the following:
m. 24 - the word on beat 1+ should be "was" — not "is"
m. 42-43 in the mezzo soprano version: the Db should be tied over
And in the newest edition from NOVEMBER 20, 2019, I changed the notation for all voice types in m. 42-43 - the held note is now a half note tied to a dotted half (and then tied over to the next measure), which more accurately reflects the beat breakdown.
m. 60 Piano starting beat 3: Accidentals had been missing in some of the parts
and the enharmonic spellings were also incorrect. The corrections are as follows:
Corrections as follows:
Mezzo-soprano and Baritone: last 3 beats are C#s, two in the LH and one in the RH
Contralto/Countertenor/Bass: last 3 beats are B naturals: two in the LH and one in the RH hand
Alternate notes for tenor from m. 68-70: sing the Bb up an octave.
