An interview about “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” – conducted by soprano Malinda Haslett

Prior to Malinda Haslett and Terry Ewell’s performance of I Never Saw Another Butterfly on March 15, 2017 at Towson University, Malinda interviewed me about the composition of my Butterfly cycle.

Terry filmed us, and the interview is now posted on YouTube, interspersed with portions of their performance.

This Holocaust-themed cycle, composed in 1996, sets the poetry of children who were killed in the Terezin Concentration Camp. The original cycle was written for soprano Lauren Wagner and saxophonist Gary Louie, who did the premiere recording for my Mystery CD, released by Albany Records in 2000.

Additional versions are scored for soprano with clarinet, and soprano with bassoon. I feel so fortunate that each version has been recorded multiple times.
